What Does OCD Treatment Look Like?
Somewhere along the way, OCD became a punchline. It got reduced to a quirky personality trait: someone who likes their desk perfectly organized or alphabetizes
Kind Mind Psychology is a virtual therapy practice serving clients across New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, and 40+ states. We believe that high-quality mental health care should be available to everyone, not just those who fit neatly into a box. That belief shapes everything we do, from the clinicians we hire to the communities we serve to the sliding scale we offer (starting as low as 5 per session).
Our team of licensed psychologists and therapists takes an integrated approach to care. That means we treat the whole person, not just a single diagnosis. We work with teens, adults, couples, and families offering support across the lifespan and across the full range of what life throws at you. Our services include individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, group therapy, and sex therapy. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, personality disorders, or relationship challenges, your treatment is tailored to you and grounded in evidence-based methods including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR, and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
We are here for all our fellow humans, and we bring deep expertise in working with BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and alternative lifestyle communities. Too many people have had the experience of sitting across from a therapist who doesn’t understand their world. At Kind Mind, you won’t have to educate your clinician on what it means to be queer or a person of color navigating spaces that weren’t built with you in mind. That understanding is already in the room so you can focus on the work that matters.
If you’re ready to work with a team that sees you clearly, meets you where you are, and will help you get where you’re trying to go, we’d love to hear from you.
Dr. Johnson is the host of ADHD &, a podcast through Understood.org exploring how ADHD intersects with relationships, identity, parenting, and daily life. Don’t miss out on her brand of humor, non-judgment, and actionable mental health tips!

Kind Mind Psychology is a Black-owned virtual group therapy practice founded by Dr. Monica Johnson, PsyD, with offices in New York City and Charlotte, NC. We offer virtual therapy across New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Delaware, and 40+ PSYPACT states. Our team of licensed psychologists and therapists specializes in evidence-based approaches including CBT, DBT, EMDR, IFS, ERP, RO-DBT, and CPT. We are deeply affirming of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and alternative lifestyle communities, and we provide individual therapy, couples therapy, DBT skills groups, teen therapy, sex therapy, and executive functioning coaching.
The best way to find out is to reach out to us through our contact page or by calling our NYC office at 646-918-1181 or our Charlotte office at 704-218-9194. We’ll ask about what you’re looking for in therapy, what you’re currently struggling with, and what your goals are — then match you with a therapist on our team whose specialties and style align with your needs. We also encourage you to read our team bios to get a sense of who we are before your first session.
Yes. We are in-network with Aetna (all states), Cigna (all states), Blue Cross Blue Shield (North Carolina only), Northwell Direct (New York only), and UnitedHealthcare (for DBT group services only). We are also adding HealthFirst soon. For clients who are uninsured or whose insurance we don’t accept, we offer a sliding scale starting as low as 5 per session. We also provide out-of-network superbills so you can seek reimbursement from your insurance company. Please contact us for details about your specific plan.
Yes. We offer virtual therapy sessions across New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Delaware, and 40+ PSYPACT states. Our Charlotte, NC location also offers in-person sessions. Virtual sessions are conducted over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform so you can attend therapy from wherever you’re comfortable. Executive functioning coaching is available nationwide.
Your first session is primarily about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask about what brought you to therapy, your current symptoms, your history, and your goals. You’ll also have the chance to ask your therapist questions and get a feel for whether the relationship feels like a good fit. There’s no pressure to dive into anything heavy — your first session is about building a foundation of trust and creating a roadmap for treatment.
It depends on what you’re working on. Some of our evidence-based approaches, like CBT, are designed to produce meaningful results within 3 to 12 months. Other concerns — such as complex trauma, personality patterns, or ongoing relationship challenges — may benefit from longer-term work. Your therapist will regularly check in with you about your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
We have extensive experience and advanced training in working with BIPOC communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, people in alternative relationships (including polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, and kink), neurodivergent individuals (particularly ADHD), teens (ages 12+), and couples of all relationship structures. Our founder, Dr. Monica Johnson, is an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and co-authored a Routledge clinical text on addressing race-based stress in therapy with Black clients. Cultural humility and identity-affirming care are embedded in everything we do.
